My crazy little brain made an interesting parallel today: directing my church choir is pretty much exactly the same as leading a World of Warcraft raid team.
I’ve been doing both for some weeks now, and I’m actually rather surprised I haven’t thought of it before. Each week I have to figure out who’s going to be around. Each week I plan something that the people I have available to me are capable of doing. Each week something invariably happens that I did not plan, and it’s up to me to deal with it somehow.
So then I start to think about why I find the choir so much less frustrating and more rewarding. I can come up with two reasons easily: I don’t have to figure out each week what days to hold choir on, and I don’t have to worry that we’ll be unable to accomplish anything at all if the whole choir doesn’t show. The days are set, and we do something with whoever we have. More chaotic, perhaps, but far less stressful.
If Muffin Hunter raiding starts up again, and I’m hoping it will, I think this will be a very useful lesson to keep in mind.

Back when I started this blog, I had just read through the entire archive of Waiter Rant and thought, hey, I’m a waitress, I bet the intarweb needs another bitchy server complaining about not getting tipped enough, right?
Turns out it doesn’t so much. Granted, I have a few not-bitchy or not tip-related things to say about being a waitress, and I’ll probably continue to throw those in every once in a while. But the whole restaurant angle just wasn’t inspiring me to write much, so I figured maybe it was time to point this blog in a new direction.
Compounding this decision was the fact that yesterday I officially became a real official student again. I took a class during the spring semester (and rocked it out if I do say so myself) but it wasn’t until yesterday that I was officially in a degree program and registered for classes toward that degree. That’s right, after eight glorious homework-free years, I’m going back of my own free will, crazy freak that I am. And I’m looking forward to it.
“But what degree?” you ask- or, well, you would, if there were any of you out there reading- with bated breath. “What program of study could so intrigue our favorite undiscovered intarweb blogger that she would voluntarily sacrifice herself to the gods of higher education?” It is Music, I tell you, and with any luck I will not regret it halfway in like I did before. But hey, I’m a little older now, and a little more grown up, and I’m there because I really want to be and not because it’s just What You Do when you get out of high school.
So we’ll see how it goes. Hopefully I will be posting more about my Musical Journey, both in school and out, and maybe I can get some more clips of performances and projects and such too, for your listening pleasure. And hopefully we’ll be a little less bitchy around here.

… then you should listen to this.
It’s a bootleg recording of a piece from this year’s Holiday Pops in Boston, and it was quite the crowd pleaser. As there’s no official recording of it available, I had the husband use my nifty new digital camera to take a movie, because really, this needs to be shared. Enjoy!
The Twelve Days of Christmas, as you’ve never heard them before!
Oh and yeah, I’m singing in there. /flex
